Work-related and Other Injuries can occur almost any time, anywhere.

In many cases, they could have been prevented. These cases illustrate the range of our experience, and the depth of preparation that’s often required.

Man On Bicycle Hit By Car

The Case:

Murdock was a professor at a university in Durham, NC and an avid bicycle rider.  One Saturday morning while on a ride, he was struck by a driver who cut in front of him at an intersection.  Murdock was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion and broken back when he was thrown from his bicycle.  He had a long and painful recovery from his back injury but never fully recovered from his head injury.  He ultimately lost his teaching job at the university.

The Investigation:

The negligent driver denied that the loss of Murdock’s teaching job was related to his head and back injuries.  Our attorneys put together a case that consisted of experts and co-workers and friends who testified about the dramatic change in Murdock after the accident.

The Results:

Through the efforts of our attorneys and after a week-long trial the jury returned a verdict in favor of Murdock.  The favorable verdict will help provide for the income that Murdock will lose over his working life as a result of him losing his job.

Benefits Rewarded In Work-Related Incident

The Case:

Jim was paralyzed from his mid-chest down in a work-related injury that was vigorously contested by the insurance company. After the case went to the NC Court of Appeals, we were able to recover life-long benefits for him. At the time he was injured, Jim was engaged to be married. His marriage was put on hold. He and his wife married a few years after his injury, and a few years after their marriage they decided that they wanted to build a home and start a family. The insurance company refused to pay for the additional cost to make the home wheelchair accessible and refused to pay for the fertility treatments that might allow Jim and his wife to have a family.

The Investigation:

We engaged experts to testify about the necessity and additional cost of making their new home wheelchair accessible. We also worked with Jim’s fertility doctors to present evidence about the methods available to help Jim harvest sperm that could then be used to possibly conceive a child with his wife and the likelihood of conception occurring.

The Results:

After a highly contested court hearing the presiding judge ruled for Jim and his wife on all counts. About 1-1/2 years after the hearing Jim and his wife arrived in our lobby with their newly born baby girl! After this joyous gathering in our lobby, Jim and his family left to go to their new wheelchair accessible home.
